Mobile Product Management: New Trends and Data for 2017
As consumers continue to rapidly increase their mobile engagement, companies in every industry have adopted mobile strategies throughout their products. It’s safe to say mobile product management is now standard practice for even the most incumbent, large companies, especially as mobile teams continue to pop up and expand.
To understand mobile’s impact on the product management industry, we recently surveyed over 200 mobile PMs. We then compared the results with our 2015 mobile product management study to identify industry trends and to see what’s changed over the years. We learned a ton about what’s top-of-mind for today’s mobile PMs, and decided to package our learnings from the survey in our new report, Mobile Product Management: New Trends and Data for 2017.
This guide was created to help mobile product managers understand how their jobs and mobile products stack up against their peers, along with tips for improving technical skills, measuring success, facing challenges, and how to get ahead. The average mobile product manager
The average demographic data for mobile product managers has shifted quite a bit from the first time we ran this survey in 2015. In 2017, the average mobile product manager has been working in their field for 4-6 years. They are between 26-35 years old, identify as male, and are paid between $100,001-$150,000 yearly for their work.
We saw a big shift in the platforms respondents work on. Many more mobile PMs now work on both iOS (97%) and Android (82%), but we saw a sizeable shift toward PMs working on Windows phones (13%), as well.
To understand the types of products our mobile PM respondents work on, we asked what industries they’re in. The results were diverse: 39% technology, 18% retail, 10% banking, 8% healthcare, 5% travel, 3% media, 3% entertainment, and 13% other. The “other” category included respondents from gambling, fashion, telecommunications, eCommerce, and real estate. There’s clearly been a huge shift toward mobile product management across industries in the last two years as more companies continue to adopt mobile strategies.

Mobile product management challenges and how to overcome them
Between interfacing with multiple teams, coordinating release schedules, prioritizing customer happiness, driving the mobile product roadmap, messaging product announcements internally and externally, and myriad other activities, the list of “to-do’s” for mobile PMs may seem endless, and the job is ever-changing. To understand just how complex the role of a mobile PM can be, we asked survey respondents to share the main words they use to describe their jobs. Here’s what they had to say:
As you can see from the word cloud above, mobile product management is nothing short of a challenge, no matter what industry you work in. But with great challenge comes great opportunity, and most PMs thrive on regularly taking on new tasks and solving difficult problems.To understand specific challenges, we asked survey respondents to weigh in on their biggest challenges. Not having enough time in the day (44%), not testing enough with users (36%), having too many responsibilities (34%), and having a small team (33%) topped the list of challenges.
Every challenge listed above is valid, and we can definitely empathize. However, none of the challenges in the list are unsolvable! Rather than responding just to our respondents’ top challenges, we want to share tips on how to approach each. There is no challenge too big or too small to address, and our guide details tips to face each challenge head-on.
