How Mobile Product Managers Can Increase Productivity

Ashley Sefferman  //  May 12, 2021  //  2 min read

Mobile product managers handle an extremely long list of competing tasks—sometimes resulting in progress paralysis. When you’re able to get clear about how to tackle your long list of to-dos, the result is more efficiency, more effectiveness, and ultimately, a more productive product planning process.

If you feel like you have too much to do and need a new method for quick, effective prioritization, our new guide The Mobile Product Manager’s Productivity Quadrant is here to help.

How to Use the Mobile Product Manager’s Productivity Quadrant

The base of the Productivity Quadrant is similar to the “Eisenhower Method,” which stems from a quote attributed to Dwight D. Eisenhower:

“I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.”

Although the main framework of the Eisenhower Method is a great way to help with prioritization in software products, it’s not a 1:1 transfer. In order to make the method workable for mobile product managers, we adjusted the framework taking product planning into account and created the Mobile Product Manager’s Productivity Quadrant.

The guide explains what The Mobile Product Manager’s Productivity Quadrant is, why it works, and how you can immediately start using it to help with prioritization of product management tasks.

A few key differences

You’ll notice a few differences in this quadrant from the traditional model.

While the “Do” and “Delete” quadrants from the original method are obvious and applicable to product management, the “Decide” and “Delegate” categories are less so. For example, product managers rarely have the luxury of delegating tasks to another person/team, which means the traditional Eisenhower approach to that piece of the quadrant doesn’t work.

To take this prioritization method and apply it directly to mobile product management, our new approach takes the “Decide” and “Delegate” categories and turns them both into “Debate” quadrants.
