Customer Love Summit Speaker Series: Ashtan Jordan, Product Manager at BMO Financial Group

But before the main event, we want to give our community a chance to get to know this year’s speakers. For our fifth interview, we sat down with Ashtan Jordan, Product Manager at BMO Financial Group, to discuss changes in the mobile landscape and pieces of her upcoming Customer Love Summit panel.

Here’s what Ashtan had to say!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hello! I am a mobile product manager at the Bank of Montreal (BMO). I have over 7 years of experience leading projects and building Retail, Fintech and Emerging Technology focused products.

In my spare time I love learning new skills, cooking/entertaining, exploring new restaurants and collecting vinyl records.

Q: How did you get into product management?

I spoke to my mentor about wanting to eventually run my own company and he mentioned Product Management was something to explore because Product Managers are often seen as ”mini CEO’s” of a product or service. I’ve always been interested in bringing different functions together and seeing something through from idea through launch. Product management marries all of these things and more.

Q: What career advice would you give your younger self?

Be flexible and explore as many careers and paths as possible in college. Don’t decide on a career path based on money. It’s ok to change your mind on your career in fact be open to this!

My first job out of college was M&A Investment Banking. The only career paths I entertained out of college were Investment Banking and Management Consulting. Neither of these careers were the best fits for my strengths but I never took the time to think about that. I pursued them because they were prestigious and the pay was great. But if I could do it all over again, I probably would’ve tried to work for an early stage tech company or maybe Amazon or Google.

Q: What excites you most about the future of mobile technology?

The future of mobile payments/mobile money and how it will redefine both the retail and financial services industries.

Q: Have you ever been to Seattle? If so, what’s the one thing you recommend someone do while they’re in Seattle? If not, what the one thing you can’t wait to do while you’re here?

I’ve never been to Seattle so I am super excited to visit! I want to do all of the touristy activities like visiting the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the Seattle Art Museum. I also plan to spend some time checking out the city’s restaurant scene.

Q: What does Customer Love mean to you?

Customer love is genuine interest in getting to know your customers. Customer love is taking the time to get real customer feedback and using that feedback to make products that customers love and want to use.
