But before the main event, we want to give our community a chance to get to know this year’s speakers. For our third interview, we sat down with Katie van Zyl, Director of Product Management at GoDaddy, to discuss changes in the mobile landscape and pieces of her upcoming Customer Love Summit talk.
Here’s what Katie had to say!
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I am currently a Director of Product Management at GoDaddy and the mother of two children (age 20 and 16). I have been in the software industry for 20+ years and have worked on many different products and platforms.
Having had a more unusual path to a career in tech (starting with a History degree!) I’ve gotten creative finding strategies to balance career development, family, and life in general. I love sports and play volleyball every Monday, love to travel, enjoy the water, and hanging with my family.
Q: How did you get into product development?
My first job at a tech company was right out of high school. I was an impressionable 18 year old who thought she was just working her way through college to pay bills. But, I was taken with the people I worked with and the products we worked on. At that time my group made an encyclopedia product on CD-ROM’s for students. A very different time then.
I loved being around creative, smart, technical people. I was curious about Product/Program Management and talked to a few of the folks I worked with at different levels to mentor me. Then, one of the PM’s went on paternity leave and I convinced them to let me do his job (and mine) while he was out. I learned a ton, did well, and was able to interview for an actual PM job a few months later. I haven’t looked back, I love it!
Q: What career advice would you give your younger self?
Be fearless, failure is part of your growth…don’t worry so much!
Q: What excites you most about the future of mobile technology?
Longer battery life! Just kidding, I’m most excited about the continued evolution of mobile capabilities. In particular, scenarios that continue to open up because a mobile device can see more, sense more, enabling you to do more.
I just built and moved into a new house. I loved using apps that allowed me to decorate, giving me views into what furniture looked like in rooms. I love being able to control all different parts of my house (locks, shades, etc.) from a button or voice command on my phone. I can only imagine the next steps towards gaming and entertainment in my home that await!
Q: Have you ever been to Seattle? If so, what’s the one thing you recommend someone do while they’re here?
I’m a local, and I love my city and home. I usually tailor a visit to what the person likes or is interested in. One thing I do with absolutely everyone is take them up to the San Juan islands.
Q: What does Customer Love mean to you?
Having curiosity to learn about the customer’s journey, pain points, and moments of joy. Not just when convenient but living it often, every day. Having the passion to understand, solve for, and celebrate these events and emotions with them.
